Wanda Wyatt (1895-1998), one of Summerside's most gracious and distinguished citizens, was the daughter of James Edward Wyatt of Charlottetown and Cecilia (Lefurgey) Wyatt of Summerside. Miss Wyatt studied at Edgehill in Windsor, Nova Scotia, McGill University in Montreal and Chicago University.
Wanda Wyatt dedicated most of her 102 years to the promotion of arts, culture and heritage in her community. She served terms as provincial President and national counselor of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire, and at the time of her passing, was the longest serving member of the IODE in all of Canada.
She also served on the Board of Governors of Prince of Wales College, Chairperson of the PEI Heritage Foundation, board member of local theatre groups, and as a member of the Friends of Confederation Centre and Friends of Eptek.
Miss Wyatt's remarkable participation in the Summerside arts community made her a mentor to both artists and administrators alike. She was named Summerside's 1989 Citizen of the Year, for “her strong association with the encouragement, promotion, and moral and financial support of the fine arts and culture of the Island.”
One day after her 97th birthday, Wanda Wyatt received an honorary doctorate of Law from the University of Prince Edward Island.
Summerside is forever indebted to Dr. Wanda Wyatt for her generous contribution to the realization of the Harbourfront Jubilee Theatre, an environment in which the performing arts and cultural diversity of the region can flourish and be celebrated.
